The Garage Before & After
Makeover your garage in five simple steps
Don't believe your garage could ever be a thing of beauty? Take a look at this Before & After to see what a little help from Rubbermaid can do. Here's how we did it.
GET RID OF EVERYTHING YOU DON'T NEED
First things first—do an inventory of all your tools, old furniture, paint cans, gardening tools, sports equipment and holiday decorations. Get rid of everything you don't want anymore, don't need, or is broken beyond repair. Have a yard sale to get rid of things that still have some life in them, or donate them. Throw out anything else, and be sure to dispose of any paint or chemicals at the proper facilities.
SET UP SHELVING AND STORAGE FOR WHAT'S LEFT
The Rubbermaid FastTrack Garage System fits in almost any space and can be customized to hold everything from tools to bikes to basketballs. And it's easy to install in three simple steps. Use small Roughneck Clears and Totes to store smaller items that you can't hang.
CREATE DIFFERENT ZONES FOR DIFFERENT TYPE OF STUFF
Every household is unique, so of course, every garage is too. That's why it makes sense to create specific zones based on your needs. Keep sporting equipment, gardening equipment, tools and other categories in their own sections, so everything you need for any project is easy to find.
KEEP THE THINGS YOU USE MOST OFTEN ACCESSIBLE
Position bikes and other frequently used items close to the door, so they're easy to move out and put back. Also, in the summer, keep garden tools in an accessible area, and switch them out in the winter with snow shovels, plows, and salt.
LABEL SO YOU CAN EASILY FIND ITEMS YOU DON'T USE AS OFTEN
Be sure to label things you don't use that often, like holiday decorations and specialty tools, so they're easy to find when you need them. Make sure you're specific, so you don't have to rummage through lots of containers.
