Rainy Day Ideas for Kids
Allow kids their creativity while still keeping clutter to a minimum with these clever ideas for organizing craft supplies and costumes

Give a child the most mundane item—a silly old hat or a colorful pipe cleaner—and watch something magical happen. Costumes and craft supplies are the perfect materials to feed kids’ imaginations. Smartly stored under the bed or behind a door, they’re always on hand to shake off the doldrums of a cloudy day.

UNDERBED DRESS-UP BOX
In the hands of a youngster, a blanket becomes a magician’s cape and a paper-towel tube, his magic wand. So why not gather your old castoffs and create a dress-up box that lets him be whatever he wants, whenever he likes.

A large plastic bin that slides under the bed is perfect for stowing the contents. When kids are done pretending, cleanup couldn’t be easier—just pile the items back inside and push it out of sight.

What should go inside? Start with some basics: An old white button-down from dad makes the perfect lab coat for a scientist; a vest is dapper wear for a sheriff. Ties, scarves, gloves, hats and sunglasses are great too. Raid your own closet first, or see what the grandparents may be willing to donate. Kids’ costumes from Halloweens past can round out the collection, and be sure to add lots of fun props—a crown, toy stethoscope, old purses and costume jewelry are just the accents to define any look.

SPACE-SAVING CRAFTS CORNER
A hanging shoe organizer keeps craft supplies in plain sight yet neat and out of the way. Jam the pockets with everything a child needs to inspire some creative projects. Just make sure paints, markers and other supplies are nontoxic and washable (pockets with stain-resistant lining can simply be wiped clean). The organizer can hang on any door, as long as it’s near a table where little ones can sit down to work.

Here are the basic supplies to get started. Fill in the remaining pockets with tools for your little crafter’s favorite activities.
