Planning for a Closet Makeover
Answer these four questions to kick-off your closet makeover.
Deciding that it is time to re-do your closet is an easy decision. However, deciding what products you need, what the best layout is and how much shelving exactly to buy can be a bit difficult. Below are four questions to ask yourself when beginning your closet makeover. Asking these questions and using them to form a plan for your closet will ensure that you get the organized closet of your dreams.
What is bugging you about your closet?
Before you start the project, it is important to step back and look at what frustrates you about your closet now. Do you have a hard time finding room to hang dresses or dress shirts? Are your shoes or suitcases taking up room on the floor? Take a look at the pain points in your closet to build solutions for them in your new plan.
What do you have to put in the closet?
Once you know the frustrations about your closet, it is time to look specifically what you need to store in your closet. This is a great time to go through your closet and decide what needs to be kept, donated, or thrown away. Rubbermaid has a great video about using the 4 Pile Principle to sort your closet.
Once you know what will be going back in your closet, measure the room it will take up. Do you need 1 foot or 4 feet of hanging spaces for dresses? Do you need 2 or 4 feet of room to fold sweaters? Having this information will be essential when designing your closet.
How much space do you have?
You will also need to know how much wall space you have in your closet to hanging shelving. Take precise measurements to bring to the store to get the correct amount and size of shelving.
What layout do you need?
After collecting all the information above, it is now time to layout the closet! Old fashioned graph paper and pencil can work to help you layout a system or Rubbermaid has a handy dandy online design tool that can help!
Remember to make the most of your space when laying out your closet. Here are some of our expert tips:
- Don’t forget about over hang space (that space the shelf takes up on the wall next to it)
- Double hang (two shelves over one another) is a great way to maximize space. Just make sure to hang the tallest shelf high enough to give you ample room to hang the second shelf and still have room to hang shirts and shorts
- Adding a really high shelf in the closet can be great to store items that are not accessed often like out of season clothing
- If you have a lot of shoes, purses or folded clothing, don’t be afraid to add an area with lots of shelves to organize these items
