Make a Mudroom That Shines
Shelves and rods can work just as hard near the back door as they do behind the closet door. With a do-it-yourself closet kit, it's easy to take a hallway from pass-through to practical

Keys, jackets, briefcases and backpacks. The area by the door is typically a landing area for all these things, dumped off before reaching their proper destinations in the front closet, kitchen or bedroom. Why not meet them halfway by using the rods and shelves of a closet to transform an entryway’s empty wall into a mudroom—a neat, organized catchall with space for every member of the family.

Homefree closet kit is a breeze to install and will work in any space (extend the upright rails so you can store things both high and low). Adjustable rods and shelves let you customize the setup to fit your family’s needs and reconfigure it with ease.

Good ventilation is key for a mudroom, where wet rain boots and outerwear are left to dry. Wire shoe shelves hung just above the floor not only allow air to circulate, but leave room underneath for a boot tray to hold rain-soaked or muddy footwear.

A high top shelf can hold collapsible bins for storing off-season items out of sight, as well as picnic blankets, shopping totes and other things the family uses less frequently.

To finish off the space, add a durable, dirt-disguising rug and a low bench. It provides a place to sit when pulling shoes on or off and a surface for resting grocery bags or tools bound for the garden. Metal flower pails are great for storing umbrellas and add a splash of color. Decorate the spaces between the uprights with photographs, a family calendar, or a clock to make sure everyone gets out the door on time.
