Having a game plan in place allows everyone to enjoy the party…and the game

The big game wouldn’t be the same without some good, old-fashioned tailgating: gathering friends, family, and sports fans alike around your grill in the parking lot to gear up before kick-off. But any good party requires proper prep, and if you’re not organized while tailgating you risk the chance of missing the start of the game. Follow our plan to put together an event to please everyone, that’s easy to set up and take down.

Plan ahead
Assign jobs to each member of the family. You not only spread the work around, but also give everyone a stake in throwing a successful party. Here are some suggestions—tailor these to fit your household.

KING OF THE GRILL: If dad is the best at barbecuing, ask him to pick up the burgers and franks. Remind him to pack the meat separately and be sure to keep it nice and cold - have plenty of Blue Ice and a 10qt DuraChill cooler on hand.

SALAD CHEF: Side dishes and desserts can be mom’s contribution to the day. Bean salad packs plenty of protein for any vegetarians in the crowd. Cookies or brownies are easy grab and go desserts, but you should also include fruit such as apples, peaches or pears for healthy options.

BEVERAGE MANAGER: The person in charge of refreshments will be happy to know the 75-qt DuraChill wheeled 5-Day Cooler will hold 130 cans plus ice and has a hinged, split lid, so drinks can be easily accessed without letting all the cold air out. Rugged wheels and an extended tow handle help maneuver a fully loaded DuraChill over the most difficult surfaces and make this the ideal cooler for tailgating.

TEAM PLAYERS: The kids in the crowd aren’t going to want to spend time debating about who’s going to score the first touchdown—they’d rather get in on the action! So they should be responsible for packing the fun stuff. A Rubbermaid Roughneck Tote is the ideal way to transport sports equipment to keep young (or not so young) kids occupied. A football or softball and a couple of gloves allow everyone to let off some steam before settling in for the game.

Grab and go
If tailgating is a regular part of your recreational routine, consider keeping a couple of Rubbermaid Roughneck Totes packed and ready to go at all times, filled with the things you really don’t want to forget:

  • Blankets
  • Sunblock
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats
  • Bug spray
  • Wet wipes, napkins and paper towels
  • Disposable dishes and cutlery
  • A portable radio (for pre-game coverage)

Store the totes in a hall closet or a corner of the garage and then just toss them in the trunk when it’s time to head out.

Pack smart
Don’t just throw things in the car randomly. Pack the trunk strategically, with the things you will need first, such as a large umbrella or canopy to provide a little shade, and the grill if you’re planning to eat right away, on the top. And start to pack up as the party winds down, so no one is stuck doing it all at the end.
