How to make the most of your laundry room

The laundry room is one of the hardest-working rooms in your house, but not surprisingly, it’s also one of the most overlooked. Unlike the living or dining area, the laundry room is usually not welcome to guests, so it often gets relegated to a dark corner of the basement where clothes, lint and empty detergent bottles inevitably pile up. But, depending on the size of your family, you likely spend a lot of time in the laundry room, so why not make it livable? We have put together some tips and solutions to make the most of your laundry space.

Clean and clear
Since it’s usually a small space, goal number one in getting your laundry room organized is to clear the area of any items that are non-laundry-related. If your laundry room has been used as an “anything-goes” storage area for years, accumulating everything from grandma’s mementoes to your son’s sport equipment, it’s time to purge those odds and ends.

Next up, assess your storage area – an essential part of any well-run laundry room. Try to maximize the space you do have by thinking vertically when it comes to shelving. If you don’t have existing shelving to house your laundry detergents and accessories, you can create storage by installing FastTrack shelving. The perfect choice for utility or laundry areas, FastTrack is strong enough to hold heavy detergent bottles. The starter kits let you customize according to need, so you can add rods to hold clothes for drying, as well as wire shelving to house your fabric softener, scrub brushes and other smaller items. Another great option: the FastTrack Adjustable Closet Kit, with TightMesh wire shelving which has twice as much wire as other shelving, so it can hold more weightand tightly-spaced wires so that nothing falls through. Plus, Rubbermaid’s sturdy, steel-wire design encourages ventilation so it resists dust, ensuring your laundry room stays neat and tidy.

Consider workflow when planning your new space. Look to create a clear path between the washer and dryer, storage/folding spot and the ironing area. Be sure to position frequently-used items close at-hand. Store detergents, fabric softeners and linen waters in clear Rubbermaid Lock-Its Containers or Canisters. Lock-Its Containers have the added benefit of a four-lock system, so you can be sure that liquid detergents won’t spill. And the Lock-Its Canisters’ modular design allows you to stack them one on top of the other, so you save more space in the laundry room.

Carry on
Getting the laundry to the laundry room can sometimes feel like a chore in itself, especially if you have a massive pile of clothes to wash. The Rubbermaid Comfort Carry Hamper is up to the job and it’s the perfect choice for large, heavy loads. It features comfort-grip handles, which make for easy lifting and carrying to and from the laundry room. And the hamper’s chic vent patterns ensure your clothes get ventilated until they’re ready for washing. For smaller loads, the Rubbermaid Comfort Carry Laundry Basket is a good companion and it’s a good idea to invest in a few of them for separating clothes by color. The Comfort Carry fits under the door of front-loading washers and dryers, so  they’re easy to load up after your wash is done.

Fresh start
You don’t have to do a complete overhaul of the laundry room to make it look more presentable. A few simple touches can work wonders to freshen things up: Try a fresh coat of paint in fresh blue or green to instantly brighten things up; add some light and airy window treatments in white linen or other fabric for a hit of polish and interest; or bring in a pretty, natural-fiber area rug to soften the space.

Think of it this way: the more you make the room livable, the more you’ll want to be there – and the more laundry that gets done!
